Who Dat’ Girl: Meme Gold

In true PD style, we always like to take the time to appreciate a babe who’s work we are totally diggin’ right now!
Meet Meme Gold?
Clothing Designer, Stylist and sometimes Photo taker, Meme Gold is this weeks ‘Dat girl. Meme is making waves with her pop culture inspired collections and humble approach to fashion. She begun creating garments at a young age, as the mainstream market did not cater for her figure. What was once a dream is now reality as Meme’s last collection “Tumblr H*e” has literally, hit the roof and has been worn by some of the biggest names in UK music!
This week we caught up with Meme to ask her some Q’s about her collections, life + #goals.
Where did it all begin for Meme Gold?
I actually wanted to be an archaeologist when I was younger. Then I found vogue in high school and that was it. I had to be in fashion! I started hand sewing my clothes to fit me better because I was too skinny to fit high street stores clothes and made plans to study fashion design at College & Uni so I could make clothes properly and figure out exactly what job in fashion I wanted. About 3 years ago I got fired from my part time job and starting sewing ideas in my head to pass the time and created the original Meme Gold jumpers using some African wax fabric I had and sold them to friends who thought they were cool. I didn’t plan to start a label but with a (big) push from my friends a year later, with help from my mums sewing machine, I’d created my first collection and launched my Facebook page and website. I was so nervous I had to get my best friend to actually click the “publish” button.
Tell us about your “Tumblr H*e” Collection?
It was inspired by my love for Tumblr. That’s why I named the collection Tumblr H*e. The Interesting imagery and injections of popular culture kind of mixed together in my head and I had the idea to embroider a phrase on clothing, made a list of phrases and HOE DONT DO IT never moved from the top of it. I made it more because I wanted to wear it and couldn’t find what was looking for but I thought other people might like it too so put it out. I didn’t know it would get the response it has it’s so cool!
What’s happin’ in 2016 with Meme Gold?
I’m working on quite a few things actually it’s all so exciting! I’ve got a carnival collection in the works and an update on my basics range. Possibly new additions to Tumblr H*e but you’ll have to watch this space!
I do a fortnightly Sunday evening show on reform radio with one of my good friends. It’s called Sunday Girls and it’s awesome. We talk too much and play great music and I don’t plan to stop!
